Tamara D. Peña, MA, LCDC, LPC-S, NCC

Owner, Psychotherapist, and Clinical Supervisor

Tamara is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a clinical board-approved supervisor (LPC-S), a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, and is also certified (NCC) by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). She holds a master’s degree in counseling from the University of Texas at San Antonio and is a member of Chi Sigma Iota - National Honor Society. Tamara completed her undergraduate studies in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Houston-Downtown.

Tamara's approach to psychotherapy is simple, yet dynamic. She believes the therapeutic relationship is an alliance... allowing her to walk in another's shoes, see through another's eyes, and experience the situation, distress, or event first-hand. Built on trust and honesty, a strong therapeutic alliance allows appropriate insight into another's life and situation. Once that happens, the therapist is able to gain an appropriate perspective and use the proper tools/interventions to help another person.

Tamara's experience encompasses many different levels of care - from outpatient services to intense crisis intervention/stabilization. She has worked with children, teens, and adults in a variety of settings. Tamara is fortunate to have been a team-clinician with the following agencies/organizations:

  • Harris County Mobile Crisis Outreach Team (MCOT)
  • ReMind (formerly the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance)
  • Shiloh Treatment Center (for refugee children)
  • Bloom Counseling & Children's Service
  • Jewish Family & Children's Services

Tamara enjoys working with both teens and adults. Her treatment scope includes stress management, coping with anxiety, combating depression, and alleviating helplessness and hopelessness. Tamara utilizes a multi-theoretical approach that is custom designed to assist each and every person.

In the spring of 2018, Tamara opened Houston Psychotherapy Consultants, PLLC to help those who live in central and greater Houston. Tamara’s office hours are extended to include evenings and weekends.

In her spare time, Tamara enjoys supervising practicum students and LPC interns. She is a firm believer that therapists need to work together in order to uphold the integrity of the field and shape the therapists of tomorrow. She is currently interviewing and accepting new practicum students and LPC-Interns. Tamara also assists in finding placement/employment for students and interns to practice under direct supervision.

When Tamara is not in the office, she enjoys live rock music, Broadway shows, and spending time with her five-year-old Chihuahua, Bella Marie.
